The Duke General Surgery Residency program is enriched and rounded by its long-standing affiliations and partnership with nearby hospitals. In addition to Duke University Hospital, surgical residents have the opportunity to care for patients and gain hands-on clinical experience through rotations at Durham Regional Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in both Durham and Asheville, NC.   
 
Consistently ranked as one of the top ten hospitals by USNews & World Report, the 989-bed Duke University Hospital is a tertiary and quaternary care hospital. On its 210 acres, it houses comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic facilities that include a regional emergency/trauma center with a separate pediatric emergency department, a major surgery suite with dedicated open-heart operating rooms, an endosurgery center where minimally invasive surgical procedures are performed, and an extensive diagnostic radiology area.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Durham Regional Hospital is a 369-bed acute care hospital that has been serving the community’s healthcare needs for nearly 30 years. A comprehensive facility, Durham Regional offers Duke surgical students experience in inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and emergency care. The medical facility also features a level II intensive care nursery, the 30-bed Durham Regional Rehabilitation Institute, and the Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center. It also features a nine-bed Coronary Care Unit and a 17-bed Intensive Care Unit.
 
 
 
 
 
The Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a 274-bed general medical and surgical facility located just across the street from Duke Hospital. The DVAMC provides general and specialty medical, surgical, psychiatric inpatient and ambulatory services, and is a major referral center for veterans in North Carolina, southern Virginia, northern South Carolina, and eastern Tennessee. The DVAMC also serves patients who need open-heart surgery, angioplasty, and hemodynamic cardiac catheterization.
 
 
 
 
 
 
The Asheville VA Medical Center is a 112-bed tertiary care facility and is classified as a Clinical Referral Level II Facility. Comprehensive health care is provided and includes primary care, tertiary care, and surgery. The medical center is known for its strong programs in cardiac (open heart), vascular and thoracic surgery. The AVAMC has a small research and development program that includes studies in cancer and cardiovascular diseases, all of which enhance the ability to provide state-of-the-art medical techniques and treatments to veteran patients.
