Post-Graduate Year 4 (SAR 2) Training Objectives
OBJECTIVE: The second year SAR is becoming a recognized leader in the Department of Surgery and in the Medical Center. He/she is immersed in the technical aspects of General Surgery and is devoted to participating in the total management of the surgical patient. The SAR2 demonstrates a readiness to assume the responsibility of General Surgery Chief Resident at DUMC. The resident should demonstrate substantial achievement of the following attributes and goals before advancing to the fifth year of training:
Has knowledge of technical steps of operations. Autonomous function in OR. Integration of assistants into operation. Fully able to set operation (retractors, assistants). Tracking of case numbers. Teach and supervise junior house staff and medical students on wards, ED and OR. Continues to read clinically oriented surgical texts. Consistently consults and applies current literature to clinical Management. Active participant in didactic sessions. Consistently engages residents and attendings in preoperative discussions. Demonstrates knowledge of indications, contraindications and potential complications of assigned operative procedures. The Pediatric services are lead by the PGY4 (SAR 2), and in addition attends, and participates in appropriate service clinic.
