Post-Graduate Year 3 (SAR 1) Training Objectives
OBJECTIVE: The first year SAR is an effective leader in the Emergency Department, running Trauma resuscitations and supervising the Junior House staff. He/she serves as the primary contact for surgical consultation in the hospital. He/she concentrates on technical learning in the operative theatre. The resident should demonstrate substantial achievement of the following attributes and goals before advancing to the fourth year of training:
Intraoperative demeanor: courtesy to staff, knowledge of prep and drape of major general cases (trauma, vascular and GI). Full terminology known. Basic retractor placement and use. Tracking of case numbers. Follows consultations postop. Participates in care of all patients operated upon. Clinical knowledge appropriate for postop care. Teach and supervise junior house staff and medical students in ED and on floor. Supervise basic technique for medical students in OR (prep, Foley). Reads clinically oriented surgical text. Consults current literature about clinical issues. Critically evaluates literature for statistical merit. Active participant in didactic sessions. Assess patients in ED and formulates differential and plan. Assess consultations and formulates differential and plan. Resuscitates trauma patients and performs leadership role in ED (room 2). Reads in preparation for each operation (indication, contraindication, potential complication). Engages senior house staff or attendings in preoperative discussion. Attends and participates in appropriate service clinic.
