Post-Graduate Year 2 (JAR) Training Objectives
OBJECTIVE: The second year General Surgery Resident expands the scope of patient management skills to encompass multiple critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit and in the Emergency Department. The resident should demonstrate substantial achievement of the following attributes and goals before advancing to the third year of training:
Central line technique, arterial line, Swan Ganz catheterization, chest tubes, Operative notes-succinct and timely. Participates in Postoperative Care of all patients operated upon. Post-operative management of critically ill patients. Management of the multiply injured patient. Assist and supervise interns with basic procedures on the floor: appropriate SICU training, Central lines, chest tubes. Teach interns and medical students in ICU and emergency department. Begins to critically read surgical journals and compendium of critical care papers. Acquires adequate clinical fund of knowledge to manage ICU patients. Begins to understand basic statistical methods. Presents on rounds in organized, brief fashion. Tracks clinical data with immediate availability. Reads in preparation for each operation; indication, contraindication, potential complications. Engages senior house staff and attendings in preoperative discussion. Becomes familiar with intensive care monitoring and management of severely injured patients.
